Verified by Spotify launched — and AI-persona profiles are not eligible

The badge is not about your music. It is about whether your profile reads as a person.

What changed. Spotify launched a Verified by Spotify badge — a green check on artist profiles that have passed a human review for authenticity. Per Spotify Newsroom, the criteria are consistent listener activity over time rather than one-off spikes, compliance with platform policy, and "signals of a real artist represented in the profile" — concert dates, merch, linked social accounts. Spotify says over 99% of artists listeners actively search for were verified at launch. The line that matters: profiles that appear to primarily represent AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible at launch.

Why it matters. Read the criteria again — none of them are about the music. Nothing there detects whether a track was generated. What the review can see is the profile: whether a human being is visibly attached to it. That means the risk for anyone releasing AI-assisted music under their own name is not the audio. It is that a profile with no linked socials, no image of a person, no shows, no merch and a very high release cadence is, to a reviewer, literally indistinguishable from a bot catalog. The badge is the signal a listener uses to decide they found the right artist.

What to do. Make the profile read as a person, because that is exactly what the published criteria list. In Spotify for Artists, link the real social accounts, set an artist image that is you rather than an album cover, and write the bio in first person naming what you actually do. If there is a site or any merch, link it. Then look hard at release cadence: a large catalog uploaded in bursts is precisely the pattern the music spam filter was built to catch, and the spam filter and the verification review are reading the same evidence, so pacing releases is not vanity — it is the difference between looking prolific and looking automated. Keep the AI disclosure at your distributor accurate while you do it. The eligibility bar as written is "AI-persona artist", not "artist who uses AI", and the way you stay on the correct side of that line is by being visibly a person who uses a tool: a name, a face, a place, a reason. If you have been treating the profile as an afterthought behind the catalog, this is the week to reverse that order.
